iF+ participated in the Check-In Hsinchu Taiwan Design Expo of 2020 and designed the Light in Motion light show at Hsinchu City Art Gallery. A warm-up for the 2021 Taiwan Lantern Festival, the show took place in the old town district. Light was used to outline the dynamic nature of the local architecture, and images from art history were shown reflecting some catchy punch lines from today’s current affairs. It was a splendid preview for the Taiwan Lantern Festival to be held in a few months. The show extended the performance period for the holiday and broke visiting records with constant praise from audiences. Energy from design and art successfully breathed life into the dynamics of a vibrant city!

Visual Script Design

As a start, architecture features from the Japanese colonialization period were deconstructed. And rhythmic geometrical patterns and noise sound effects were added, giving the traditional building a brand-new technological aesthetic.

In addition, art works from different periods of time all around the world were used, including: Piet Cornelies Mondrian’s Composition II with Red, Blue, and Yellow (1930) shuttled between buildings; the optical illusion stairs in Maurits Cornelis Escher’s Waterfall (1961); Chang Hong-Yu’s Taiwan Yellow Cattle Whipping Spring featured at the arch of the front hall of Hsinchu City Art Gallery and serving as the stage where the Bull chases the Mouse in Chinese zodiac story; the scroll unfolded from Zhu Jin-Cheng’s Spring Blessings; Sun Kang’s Chian Yuan, unveiling an endless flow of art and culture throughout the museum.

Finally, Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper was given a new twist with elements from Taiwan CDC’s press conference to describe and reflect the digital age and the post-epidemic world of our times. The composition consisted of “+0”, selfies, camera flashes, and emojis, turning into an artistic collage of contemporary vernacular.
